Editorial Review for San Antonio Missions National Historical Park – by Judd Maroney
Overview
The story of San Antonio begins with the establishment of the missions in the early to mid-1700s. Since that time, they've become so interwoven into the fabric of the community that they're often overlooked. Tourists and locals go down to the Riverwalk to enjoy a cocktail, and it never crosses their minds that the channels that are now lined with bars and restaurants once served Mission San Antonio de Valero, better known as the Alamo.
The Experience
Activities at the park cover the spectrum. There's a 15-mile loop for bicycling; add the six miles back and forth to the Alamo and you have a full day. This is one of the few bike-friendly places in San Antonio, with 90 percent of the route designated as bike trails. Begin at Mission San Jose. The park is an accessible, friendly place to spend an afternoon.
