A great place but , needs to bring back some of the roots from the old place!. I now live in Phoenix AZ, when I come back to the D I stop by all of my old stopping ground bars. I Agree with the guy with the comment that "Even know the old place was a pit, it still had way more charecter than the new place" I will say that the food their is great, John said at the old place he would never serve food. Well never say never. I do like the new place yet when I come in John is not there much anymore, that was half of the allure to going to the old place. In addition, at the old place John would pour your drinks to a very stong acceptable level and drink allong with you. At the new place the drinks are frankly as week as those fancy bars in Birmingham. It is sad for me. So, although I like the new place and the jukebox is probably the best in America still, and having the internet at the bar is the best idea ever, I think John needs to teach his new bartenders to pour an "Honest John Drink" like back at the old place.

the place to go. this is one of detroit's best bars because it's clean and it doesn't smell too bad. if you're looking for the perfect bar experience, go to honest john's and put $5 in the amazing jukebox, have a 40oz black label and drink it out of the bottle, order some veggie chili fries and smother them in mustard and hot sauce.

Love it and hate it. I've been there for a couple of "mercy meals" as I like keeping my money in town. Walked out once due to lack of service. Now who walks out of a dive bar because of lack of service? I did come back because the burgers are so darn good, (and so is much of the menu) and when the arrive, the drinks are great.

If it ain't broke.... Sure the "new" place is fancier, cleaner, roomier, more convenient, but the old place, scungy as it was, had character, a cat named Smurl, and a certain je ne s'ai quoi. Now the only consistent character it has is John Thompson, bless his heart...
