Editorial Review for The Classic Grille & Bar – by John Horn
The Scene
A roomy and well-lit dining room with windows facing the Detroit waterfront afford a nice view of Canada. Cool, mod retro light fixtures and smoothly finished wood appointments define this wide-open dining room. An excellent private dining area, just off the main room and separated by curtains entertains a table of eight in gray, muted olive tones. The crowd varies, from conventioneers and downtown dwellers to locals.
The Food
The dinner menu houses a bit of everything, from standard bar-type lunch fare to well-thought-out dinner entrees. The 9-ounce filet, along with the 12-ounce "West Side" New York sirloin are mouth-watering and succulent. Half-chickens, soaked in "Sweet Baby Ray's" barbecue sauce feels like picnic food in an elegant dining arena. The tempura shrimp are large and clean, fried surprisingly lightly in batter with soy ginger sauce. Lunch includes any number of half-pound burgers, assorted sandwiches and even a Coney Island dog.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoClassic is across the street from COBO, the city's largest convention center. When the North American International Auto Show is happening, parking is impossible and the restaurant is pretty busy. The same applies to Red Wings games at Joe Louis Arena.
Where to SitIf possible, right up front by the windows, for a nice view of Canada and the river. In warmer weather, the outside patio area is a must.
