Editorial Review for Una Pizza Napoletana – by Erin Behan
The Scene
A grey tin ceiling, white walls and a white tile floor--the marble-topped tables are as dressy as the pizza joint gets, but no matter. The main event, the authentic wood-fired brick oven, glows enticingly from the back of the room, with its heavily tattooed, well-trained guardian transferring pies to the dining room's lone server.
The Food
The charred but chewy crust pays homage to the Napoli pizza it mimics and stands up to the generous application of rich olive oil. Made from naturally leavened flour and mixed by hand with Sicilian sea salt, it is the springboard for restaurant's fabulous pies. Diners choose from just four stellar pies--the Marina, Margherita, Bianca and Filetti--whose topping combinations shift every so subtly and never veer from the classic ingredients of tomatoes (sourced from San Marzano or fresh cherry tomatoes), buffalo mozzarella, olive oil, oregano, basil, garlic and sea salt.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe restaurant doesn't take reservations, so be sure to arrive early to secure your spot. The restaurant serves piping hot pizza fresh from the oven from 5pm until the dough runs out--literally.
What to DrinkThe drink menu is small but offers a selection of southern Italian wines and Italian beers, including Moretti and Peroni. Nonalcoholic selections include the Moka Drink, a fizzy Italian version of Starbuck's bottled Frappuccino.

I went to this place about 3 years ago. I haven't been back since only because I moved to Los Angeles shortly afterward. Maybe things have changed, but it was the best pizza I have ever had. I loved the simplicity of the space, the wine - it was overall a great experience. The staff were nice as well. It's too bad things have gone south here - for me, it was one of those amazing NYC experiences that I will never forget.

I lived in italy half my life, just to state that I do know what I am talking about. I am also not an arrogant person. But una pizza napoletana is...if it were a person. All staff is arrogant....a snobbish "no" when asked for pepper....a 40 minute wait on a nonbusy Thursday. A variety of four pizzas, none w meat or fish.....each $ 20+ There are at least 40 better pizza restaurants in the same zip code, let alone in the city. This just shows you what hype and a short opening season during the week does to (some silly) NYers. Come on, brighten up, smell the fresh pizza elsewhere.
Pros: niente
Cons: pizza, ambience, owner, staff, variety, price
