Naka

Voted Ferndale's Best New Independent Boutique 2006

  • Home of the Day-Twa T-Shirt
  • Quirky, Unique & Chic Gifts
  • Local and National Artists

The Scene: Quickly becoming the place to shop for unique, well-designed accessories, gifts, and stationery in Ferndale, Naka caters to those with a taste for the handmade, hip, and quirky. On any given day, you'll find indie kids, accessory mavens, and jewelry fanatics browsing Naka's shelves or visiting with Ava, the store dog.

The Store: Bright and open, with minimal clutter, Naka feels like a really cool friend's apartment, where everything just happens to be for sale. It's a small space, but the selection is very well-edited and ever-changing, and the prices have somehow managed to stay very reasonable. The friendly staff will help you pick out just the right t-shirt, handbag, wallet, baby outfit, or piece of jewelry for you and your male or female friends.

Awesome place for vinyl and fabric bags. They have leather too, but I'm not interested in that. Super cute stuff all the time, the best for presents. Owner is really nice and knows a lot about all of the merch.

Pros: Lots of stuff from local artists, lots of vegan accessories

Cons: not open on sundays anymore

I used to shop online for a lot of the lines they carry at Naka, because they're hard to find and usually are only sold online or in Chicago, New York, etc. The buyer at Naka has an amazing eye and puts together a fantastic selection--some inexpensive and some more high end, but the prices hold up well compared to what's online and in other stores. They have a site too, I think. I stop in a lot to see what's new and to drewl over the things I want my husband to buy me for my birthday. Are you reading, honey?

Pros: good for gifts, amazing jewelry

Cons: parking can be tricky (try the lot by Rosie's)
