Detroit >Sweet Lorraine's Cafe & Bar
What a dissapointment!.
I feel like I wasted money and time by visiting Sweet Lorraine's on December 13, 2007. The food was mediocre at best but the service was what made the experience even worse. The calamari we ordered as an appetizer was really greasy and unappealing to even look at so we sent it back. The meal itself was OK, even though I felt it was overpriced for what we got. But what took the cake was the lack of service from our waitress. She was so unattentive that you would think the place was buzzling with customers...no, because it was early in the afternoon, there were only two tables with customers! We came from the bar area with drinks that were almost empty but she never asked if we wanted a refill or something different to drink. We were served one glass of water at the beginning of the meal and we had to ask for someone to refill that. We never saw the waitress again until we were done with our main entree and she brought the bill back.
I have dined at the Sweet Lorraine's in Southfield and have always had good food and good service. I will continue to be a patron there but I will never visit the Detroit location again.
So disappointed. Perhaps it would have seemed like just another nite of bad service and mediocre food had it not been for the expectations I harbored from my days in Ann Arbor. With the exception of the same hot decor, the experience was not comparable. In at least this splendid location in downtown Detroit, two of my three (calamari and wings) appetizers arrived cold. Unable to face a cold fried plate of squid, I returned it and the waitress arrived with a smaller portion of the refried dish. At the end of the night, I checked to make sure the waitress had deducted the cost and was again surprised! She charged me $71 for a $32 bottle of wine. The sour-faced manager sauntered over to my table to make sure I had gotten the cheaper wine that I had ordered before she adjusted my bill...didn't even stop to ask about the rest of the nite...What's even more disappointing is that another waitress confided that my complaints (cold calamari and being overcharged for this particular bottle of wine) were in fact quite common. You've been warned...
