Editorial Review for Monterrey Cantina – by John Horn

In Short
Long a staple of the popular downtown Royal Oak, Monterrey Cantina generates an immediate Mexican flavor. A huge menu, and even bigger margaritas, stand out in this smartly decorated dining room. Pepper lights and authentic Mexican murals (including a great boxing painting behind the bar) help define the interior. Huge chimichangas and hot fajitas, along with a nice list of drinks and one of the most popular outdoor dining patios, solidifies its reputation.

The "Iguana" is a green margarita that's all tequila and fun, served in a cool and curvy glass.

A big municipal lot at Third and North Center (the block behind the restaurant) is quick and close. Or circle the block for a street space.

My boyfriend and I LOVE Mexican food, so we were very excited to try a different place. We were seated very promptly and given chips and salsa immediately. We were both pleasantly surprised by the spice in the salsa since we both enjoy spicy dishes, but found it VERY salty. We both ordered the house margarita (pricy, around $8 for a jumbo) and unfortunately the tequila was virtually undetectable. I ordered the flautas and found them to be very tasty and I really enjoyed the guacamole, which also had a nice spice to it. I don't remember what my boyfriend ordered, but he also enjoyed his meal. The serving size was large and I had enough leftovers to enjoy for dinner the next evening. When we received our bill, it was around $55 (This included 2 entrees, 2 beers, 2 margaritas), so not the cheapest of meals. We usually go to a Mexican restaurant in Sterling Heights that has better food, cheaper prices, but not as trendy of an area. So, the experience was overall a good one, but I think we will stick to our usual spot and when we want to spend that much money we'll get sushi :)

Pros: Nice, trendy area with friendly service.

Cons: Expensive and margaritas disappointing.
