Editorial Review for Wheat & Rye Steak House – by Karen Dybis
In Short
Clint Eastwood would feel right at home inside this popular bar and restaurant. The lighting is low enough for a private rendezvous, while still illuminating the pool table and ice hockey games. The jukebox ranges from Led Zeppelin to Travis Tritt to Britney Spears. The bar is fully stocked from Coors to cosmos. The menu features hearty portions of macho nachos, the Italian Stallion sub and 20-ounce steaks with all the trimmings.

The wheat and Rye is one of the best steak houses in the downriver area. The food is great and the price is not absorbant. I normally get very good service. I do however have a complaint about my visit on 8/08/08. After ordering our food for 4 peaople we asked the waitress for a glass of water cause my husband was getting the hicups. We were told we would have to buy a bottle of water. The waitress was very apologetic. I asked to speak with the manager. He told me because of the rise in the cost of food the owner started selling bottle water instead of raising the price of the food. I explained that we were paying customers and should not have to pay the $1.00 for water when we are paying a $70.00 food bill plus tip. I was more or less told he would not break this new rule under no circumstances. I guess I will go to the Coney Island if I want free tap water. This I thought is poor customer service. Are times that hard you can not get a glass of water. I told the manager I would take tap water which is what Idrink at home, again I was told I would have to buy my water. After 10 years I do not know if this will stop me from going to the Wheat and Rye but it did leave a nasty taste in my mouth.
Pros: good service and food
Cons: must buy water

It is a shame how down hill Wheat and Rye is going. The food is pretty good, and they have decent drink specials, but the service and management have major problems. The will not serve a glass of ice water. The only way to get water in Wheat and Rye is to purchase a bottle. When I asked to speak to the manager about the waitress refusing to bring me a glass of water, she told me, "it is the manager's rule, and he doesn't care if you complain." This tells me one of three things. The waitress was lying and wanted a higher cut of tips due to a higher bill, the manager is completely arrogant, or they have some water issue and are making customers paying for the repairs. I didn't feel like having a beer yet, and was not paying for water, so I ordered a pop. Apparently there are no refills here, or the wait staff is not familiar with customer service. My glass was empty prior to the food arriving, and was not refilled once during my visit. Based on this experience, I will never be returning to this bar, and have notified a good number of people in the city about the terrible visit. I am curious as to what would happen if I ordered a bunch of drinks, and asked for water to sober up. Based on what I heard from the waitress, the manager would rather I get behind the wheel drunk than serve me a glass of ice water.
Pros: Nice New HD TVs
Cons: Terrible Management and Wait Staff, Refuse serving water to customers, Don't check up on customers during visit
