Editorial Review for Box Bar – by Kristin Lewan
The Scene
Ask anyone in Plymouth about this hometown favorite and they'll recommend the burgers. Though the quaint bar underwent a facelift and expansion in the late '90s, it's still laid-back, as most meals are served on paper plates, and it's easy to see the cook prepare a meal through a window into the kitchen. The bar's incredible beer selection--more than 200 variations from around the world are housed in its coolers.

Been stopping at the Box Bar for the last few years, and have always found the food to be top-notch. I've read some reviews about slow service, and while the staff is less than starch-collar, they are very friendly and quick to deliver the food hot. Menu selections are not Ruth's Chris, but they are decidedly well above anything that could be called bar food. Portions are huge. The soups are obviously made from scratch, always excellent. Get a bowl of soup if you plan to swim in it ! A cup is enough. Vegetable beef is fabulous, cheese soup is rich and very well made. Pulled pork sandwich is a must, comes on a huge onion roll with slaw on the side (go ahead, dump it on the sandwich). you'll have to use a fork for a while first, before you can pick this sandwich up. All in all, the food is down-home-made, American, stick to your ribs GOOD.

Kudos on the beer menu but that's about where the kudos stop. I recently walked into the box bar for lunch. The hostess sat my wife & daughter & I at a table. We sat for 20 minutes without any of the wait staff acknowledging our existence. They seemed as though they were intentionally avoiding eye contact. I said "excuse me" to one as she walked directly past our table and she acted as if nobody was sitting there or speaking to her. She apparently was too busy watching Fox news and tending to her "young country" haircut to earn a gratuity that afternoon. The place wasn't busy. we were one of 5 or 6 tables in the main area. If she was sizing me up she did very poorly. I'm a young guy but I do pretty well for myself. I've put in my time working in restaurants and I usually tip very well. 20 minutes without so much as a "hello, I'll be with you in a moment" from the wait staff is totally unacceptable--especially for overpriced bar food.
Pros: great beer selection
Cons: abhorrent service
