In Short
A home away from home for immigrants, recent and otherwise. The decor features the Virgin of Guadalupe and velvet matador pictures, while the Rockola sings only in Spanish. There's no alcohol, but branch out from the tacos and enchiladas you can get anywhere (though Lupita has those too). Sample posole (a hominy and pork soup); or shrimp and pulpo (octopus) cocktail; or horchata, a sweet drink based on rice.

For REAL tacos (Los Angeles quality) visit Taqueria Lupita -- the best Al Pastor, Carna Asada, and others (you can even get cabeza or buche) around. Each taco is served on two fragrant tortillas for only $1. Plenty of chips, great hot salsa, cilantro and onions.

Know Before You Go:
No desserts here. But stroll east to La Gloria Bakery for Mexican cookies, or a few blocks west to Mexicantown Bakery, at Vernor and Clark, for cookies and flan.
