Giovanni's

Detroit's finest Italian Cuisine since 1968

Walking into Giovanni's today is not much different than it was being in the Cannarsa home during any of their special family gatherings. The same comfortable, congenial, atmosphere makes even distant strangers feel at home. Family photographs and antiques are displayed just as they were in Rosa's own living room. And just like home, the kitchen buzzes with activity preparing Rosa's traditional dishes as well as an endless gourmet of specialties created by Frances, Randy and their special staff.

Editorial Review for Giovanni's – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
A favorite stop for executives and diners in the know, Giovanni's is a Detroit staple, and the real deal: A simple, homey atmosphere complete with family photos on the wall and waiters in vests and bowties. Giovanni's homemade pasta is exceptionally fresh, and the menu emphasizes classics like lightly battered fried calamari and zesty sausage sauteed with onions and peppers. The homemade balsamic-honey salad dressing adds a unique tang to any leafy entree.

Giovanni's is a Detroit institution. And, in a neat switch, they manage to hold to their own high standards. Through fires, economic downturns, and suburban flight, Giovanni's has continued to turn out consistently high-quality Italian food. The food is great, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the owner's commitment is evident. Go. Eat. Enjoy. Oh--and try the spinach gnocchi. It's the best!

Pros: Great Italian food

Cons: Iffy neighborhood - use the valet parking

Diverse menu, well-prepared food, superb ambience, excellent service, secure parking, and a personal touch from the owner and her family. For seven years, our favorite place for romantic dining.

Pros: Parking: In our experience over 7 years, valet parking is excellent, friendly, and highly secure.
