What People Are Saying About Giovanni's

In Short – A favorite stop for executives and diners in the know, Giovanni's is a Detroit staple, and the real deal: A simple, homey atmosphere complete with family photos on the wall and waiters in vests and bowties. Giovanni's homemade pasta is exceptionally fresh, and the menu emphasizes classics like lightly battered fried calamari and zesty sausage sauteed with onions and peppers. The homemade balsamic-honey salad dressing adds a unique tang to any leafy entree.
Editor's Tips
- Know Before You Go:
- The dining area is small; expect a wait, even with reservations.
- Save Money:
- The lunch menu is nearly identical, and about half the price of dinner.
OVER PRICED SLOP!
by Funcool at Citysearch
The owner is pretentious the waiter was terrible after telling us how Frank Sinantra ate there. The food tasted like Frank threw it up. Lasagna unrecognizable with some wierd nutmeg tasting whitesauce. Over priced wine tasted like $3.97 Chard from Walmart and the bathroom was disgusting. This place may have been good but it's not anymore.
- Pros: Non
- Cons: Everything.
The food was good BUT.....
by JanModz at Citysearch
The food was very, very good but you couldn't hear the person talking right across the table from you. Everyone in our party complained about the same thing. They need to do something to reduce the decible level otherwise, as good as the food was, many of us wouldn;t think of going back. My ears are still ringing.
- Pros: Good Food
- Cons: Pricy and Noisy
Outstanding Italian
by tflucht at Citysearch
Giovanni's is a Detroit institution. And, in a neat switch, they manage to hold to their own high standards. Through fires, economic downturns, and suburban flight, Giovanni's has continued to turn out consistently high-quality Italian food. The food is great, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the owner's commitment is evident. Go. Eat. Enjoy.
Oh--and try the spinach gnocchi. It's the best!
- Pros: Great Italian food
- Cons: Iffy neighborhood - use the valet parking

Diverse menu, well-prepared food, superb ambience, excellent service, secure parking, and a personal touch from the owner and her family.
For seven years, our favorite place for romantic dining.
- Pros: Parking: In our experience over 7 years, valet parking is excellent, friendly, and highly secure.
Just great comfort food!

Order an entree but you MUST order a pasta too. It practically melts in your mouth. You'll find out what you've been missing at other italian restaurants.
- Pros: The taste of the food
