Editorial Review for Nami Sushi Bar – by Ron Wade
In Short
Regular customers chat with the sushi chefs and the servers are friendly. The small, narrow dining area with its sparse decorations and large center bar project a laid-back and unintimidating sushi experience for novices as well as frequent connoisseurs. Sushi prepared from a dozen different types of fish and vegetarian selections are available. Special requests are handled easily. Besides the standard menu, Nami has several creative daily specials that encourage experimentation.

I've been a patron of Nami for years, and I've put up with the typically spotty service and rude owner for the quality of the sushi that eventually arrived at my table at a reasonable price. I have to say, no more. Our last visit featured obviously overburdened watistaff (two servers for all indoor and outdoor tables in a full restaurant), chefs and servers shouting at each other about orders, and a cloud of fruit flies hovering over the tables. Finally, the quality of the sushi on my last few visits has fallen to the point where I'll gladly go elsewhere and pay a little more for better quality, service, and ambiance. This change in quality may be attributable to the new guys behind the sushi counter, but the high turnover rate of staff in general is a sign that something's not right here. If you want to save a few bucks on mediocre sushi with poor service, stop in at Nami. Sadly, I'm done with what used to be a local diamond in the rough.
Pros: A few bucks cheaper than others around town
Cons: Quality and service have bottomed out

The sushi was okay. It was reasonably fresh and tasted reasonably good. There were a few more bells and whistles than I like to have in sushi (no cream cheese, thank you very much). But the service was really obnoxious. At first I didn't understand how the menu was organized and when I asked, the young woman was pretty patronizing. Turns out that the menu is in two sections - rolls that aren't inside out, and rolls that are. Once I saw that, I got it, but the server was incredibly patronizing while she explained what a sushi roll is. Sorry, dear. I've probably been eating sushi since before you were born. Your little restaurant in Ferndale, MI is not the place to be condescending to an Asian American ordering sushi. Moreover, she didn't take our food order until our drinks were half finished (about 20 minutes), and then the food didn't come out for another 40. The restaurant was empty. Luckily, we were drunk from drinking our martinis on empty stomachs so we just laughed it off. I'd go back because the sushi was pretty good, the prices were pretty good, the drinks were pretty good, and maybe little Ms. Muffin has moved on in her career.
Pros: reasonably good
Cons: service is obnoxiously bad
