In Short
Located on the riverfront, this multi-purpose entertainment venue opened in 1979. For an arena that holds nearly 20,000, it retains an intimate feel from even the farthest seat. Named for boxer Joe Louis, it's seen everything from the Red Wings bringing home the Cup to Disney on Ice. Performances like the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus and WWE pro wrestling stop by as frequently as concerts from big-name rap, country and rock groups.

I've been to the arena for both a hockey game and a concert and had a good time each time. The staff were courteous and helpful when approached with a question. They have a great alcohol selection which can be both a good and a bad thing.

I was pretty dissapointed after seeing NIN at joe lewis arena recently. The arena was origingally built for a sports complex, but it really doesn't lend iteslf well to a music concert. Of course, it's worth it if you really like the band, but definitely not an ideal place. PROS: CONS: super expensive drinks

We love watching the Red Wings at this arena, when we can get tickets. It is hard to get tickets to the hockey games, but when you go, no matter how high you are, the view is great. The ushers are pretty helpful-when they aren't watching the game. It is clean for such a big venue, and parking is in lots close by, I usually have my husband drop us off while he parks the car.
