Editorial Review for Historic Holly Hotel – by John McTaggart

In Short
Just the sight of the Holly Hotel is awe-inspiring. A three-story, gabled, hip-roofed, red brick, Queen Anne-style structure is set in historic old-town Holly. Inside, custom millwork, plaster walls, ornate fixtures and tin ceiling give this establishment an elegance that is second to none. The poached filet of Norwegian salmon and beef Wellington are as elegant as the surroundings--and are deliciously complimented with champagne and spinach cream sauce and mushroom Duxelle.

We made the unfortunate mistake of selecting the Sunday brunch at the Holly Hotel to celebrate my mother's 75th birthday. Upon approaching the food tables, I witnessed the wait staff rearranging the meager cheese tray with their bare hands. Yuck! Their advertised brunch selection is pretentious given the lousy execution. Was that french toast? Hard to tell based on appearance and the handwritten (tacky!) place cards were easily misplaced, making the mystery dishes all that more mysterious. The made-to-order omelettes were undercooked and the roast beef overcooked. The other entrees were so unremarkable I can't even remember what they were. Just overcooked. There were no fresh fruit or vegetable trays and the one lone salad, an unembellished arugula salad, was oil drenched. We tried to be gracious to the wait staff though I was the one to suggest he take drink orders to start and reminded him at the end of the meal that coffeee would be nice. To cap a disappointing experience off, the children in our party were charged at the adult rate. When we complained to management, they told us the wait staff watches guests to see how many times they go to the food table. Based on their observations, they reserve the right to charge at the adult rate. How many times can children, who are often picky eaters, be allowed to the food tables before they are charged as adults? What if they return several times for cheese and crackers and leave the Hungarian Goulash, or whatever that was, alone. My elderly mother eats like a bird. Why not charge her as a child? Cheap! I wouldn't mind paying the adult rate if the younger children had really eaten like adults. But they didn't, and charging us as though they had is unethical. There are much better brunches in metro Detroit. Stay away from this one!

Pros: lots of parking. No wonder!

Cons: Food quality and selection. Billing ethics

The Holly Hotel is warm, romantic, and welcoming. The food is outstanding...the wine list is very affordable...the service is normally very good. The cuisine is unique and vegetarians are not just accomodated but celebrated. Having eaten a great restaurants throughout the world...I still enjoy this small town treasure. Don't miss it!

Pros: romantic, friendly, great service
