Editorial Review for The Cub Room – by Dana Bowen

The Scene
Since 1994, the Cub Room--named for the legendary Stork Club's exclusive VIP area--has hosted Soho's chic-and-trendy set. The tall, window-wrapped corner lounge, with its plush, honey-toned banquettes and wood bar, is still the perfect place for after-work cocktails. The dining room's elegantly-appointed tables and corporate high-rollers seem a world away from the cafe attached next door. With brick walls, fruit-filled wicker baskets and vintage posters, it's a sunny spot for casual meals.

The Food
One kitchen, three menus. On the high end, New American dishes feature roasted chicken with spaetzle and rabbit ravioli. The parsnip-short-rib dumplings are rich and tender; flavorful grilled hanger steak and the cafe's bacon-wrapped meatloaf are sure bets.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

The 18-seat Chef's Table, tucked away in a wainscoted room with French doors, has a view of the kitchen at work. Call ahead to reserve.

What to Drink

The lengthy, international, fairly priced wine list continues to receive Wine Spectator awards. Of the dozen wines by the glass, the Hugel Gentil ($8/$32) pairs nicely with the food.

I've recently started working in the neighborhood & was happy to be able to frequent The Cub Room again, as i had great memories from the late 90's of meals here. Sad to say, its fallen under poor management. 3 weeks ago was there for lunch & a giant waterbug crawled up the wall + the waiter gave us very poor service. Then 2 weeks later went back & it took 45 minutes to get a chicken cobb salad & a coke, while the restaurant was barely occupied. Today, i took a party of 14 and it was such a disaster that my boss was freaking out the whole time (which made me look bad for picking the place.) 3/4 of our party ordered from the Pre-fix, yet it was still amazing how badly our food came out of the kitchen. The first round of drinks took 30 minutes to arrive, the soups/salads took another 45 minutes to appear and the entrees came out over 1 1/2 hours into being there. For lunch, that's not acceptable service. Plus, the pulled pork sandwich was ice cold in the middle as if it was still frozen. All this with barely any acknowledgment or apology from staff/management. Considering we had a reservation for over a week, there's no good reason for this kind of service. When reading the other reviews, its clear that management/staff are submitting posts to offset all the bad reviews. While its a nice space with lots of history, don't take anyone there you plan to impress. Its better for a glass of wine or a beer after work.

Pros: Nice space, good wine/beer selection, view of Prince Street.

Cons: Poor service from waitstaff & kitchen--a perfect candidate for Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmare makeover

After having been in the restaurant business for most of my life, I look forward to dining out and having new experiences. My dinner at the Cub Room certainly constitutes a new experience. The menu, at first glance, is very recognizable. The catch here is the way the food is presented. The beauty of the dishes rivals any art work I have seen pertaining to food, but the best and most important feature was the flavor. As I was chewing, a myriad of flavors were released into my mouth with strength and subtlety combined. The combinations chosen by this Chef compliment each other to give the diner an experience to be remembered.

Pros: GREAT FOOD AND GREAT SERVICE

Cons: PARKING
