Bates Hamburgers

Bates is legendary in Livonia. If you haven't been there, you must try it. The burgers, while a bit greasy are extremely tasty. Try the crinkled fries and a shake with your burgers as well. Bates used to be open much later back in the day. They close earlier these days so check the hours prior to making the trek.

Oh yes! This place has stuck with the basics! I absolutely love the old "porcelain palaces". Everytime I am in the neighborhood I stop by for three with everything, a coke, and an order of fries well done. The one MAJOR problem with this place is they have no public restroom! I think that is even against Michigan law!

Pros: The ambience is perfect for a "Porcelain Palace", I love it!

Cons: No public restroom! ***No porcelain pony in this porcelain palace!*** Yikes!

I don't know what "Very Overrated is talking about below (probably just a complainer)...Bates is one of the last bastions of real take out hamburgers left in the area!!! Crisp crinkle fries, fountain soda, REAL milk shakes and hamburgers that make the so-called sliders kings run in fear! This place is a Livonia landmark that should be revered.

Pros: Best sliders in the area!

Cons: Hard to park...no arguement there.

I am 49 years old and have lived in Livonia all my life. I must admit I don't go to Bates real often, but I would have to say I visit it at least once a month when I get this incredible craving for it. The burgers are greasy, but that is the reason they taste so fantastic !!! Try their fries extra crispy!!!! I've never had better.

Pros: great food, great prices, fast service

Cons: parking

we had good friends (Canadian) they come my place before go bowling we chat and got little hungery. I did order and then we ate and they loved it and told me they are good likes the bates better

I heard soooo much about this place, from other websites and people around town. We decided to check it out and boy were we disappointed. The burgers were void of a good beef taste they were loaded with fat and gristle and tasted of grease and old onions. I ended up putting a ton of salt on them in efforts to improve the taste. I waited a few months thinking maybe they were just having a bad day. When I went back to try again I was just as disappointed. Its not worth the trip, even if you live across the street.

Pros: Cheap, quick, friendly

Cons: tasteless, fatty, parking tight

bates' burgers are by far the best. my dad grew up in livonia and my grandma still lives there. when ever we're on the east side i always ask to get bates. it great to go there, because the food is so good, the place is so quaint, and my dad always has stories to tell about bates from when he was growing up, and it was open 24/7. its an experience in its own.

I've been going here for years just for the burgers. Finally I tried the breakfast and who would of guessed.... its just as tasty as a good ol' white wrapper bates burger

Pros: Tasty, inexpensive, Close to Home

Went to Ladywood HS, just around the corner from Bates...we used to hit Bates all during the school day....after graduation used to hit it at all hours of the night. Sadly, it is not open 24/7 but, when my daughter (now 18) was very little, I introduced her to Bates and ever since then, she knows the best way to get my attention by saying, "mom, I'm having a Bates attack -- can we go?" and we are out the door!! Best burgers ever!
