Best food in Greektown

by rudejohn

Having grown up less than an hour from Chicago's Greektown, my personal bias didn't leave me expecting much when I stepped into this place across from a casino in Detroit. I was pleasantly shocked at some of the most delicious food I've ever eaten, and his gem with its slight Cyprean bias on longtime cultural favorites will leave you delighted. The service and friendly atmosphere will only reinforce that welcome feeling. This is the spot I bring all my out-of-town visitors, as well as the place my friends and I usually choose on birthdays, special occasions, or any excuse we can invent to head on over. I agree with the reviewer; don't miss the succulent special house lamb dish.

  • Pros: Marvelous food, pleasant people, convenient location
  • Cons: Restaurant size, restroom size

worst food

by JohnTaylor2004

I am Greek so I know Greek food and any god food for that matter. Yes, the owner is nice and friendly but the food is very bad and in some cases cannot be eaten. Nothing tastes like Greek food and the spinach pies (spanakopita) were awful. Generally it is very piced and bd quality. The bathrooms are very dirty and the upper area where the bathrooms are stink really bad. It also looks as if someone was sleeping in the upper area since there were a bunch of blankets on the floor and pillow.

  • Pros: nice service
  • Cons: bad food

Best food in Greek Town

by billbig

the Cypress Taverna is a place of great food and very good service--it is not a fancy hideaway but a comfortable place to enjoy excellent food--whether its lamb, chicken or fish---the lamb chops are outstanding--owner Vassos adds to the atmosphere--I am Greek and have ate at the many restaurants of Chicago,Tarpon Springs,Toronto and most of the country--the Taverna has been consistantly good--I started eating their at their opening several years ago and when in town will always have a meal there--

  • Pros: everything
  • Cons: none

Greektown's best is not the oldest or the biggest.

by Contributor

In Short
Owner Vassos Avgoustis welcomes patrons into his cozy room. The crowd is lively and service is brisk. The usual Greek specialties and some less well-known, such as tyropitakia (cheese triangles in filo) or kalamarakia (fried squid). The specialty is a Cypriot version of lamb, klestikon. Avgolemono soup is based on homemade chicken broth. The skordalia is the best in Greektown (it's a garlic dip made with pureed baked potatoes).

Santorini surprise

by mrneeze

Like most big cities, Detroit has its share of tourist traps (well, it's really not a tourist haven, but you know what I mean). Although there are plenty of restaurants in Greektown, Cyprus Taverna is one of the best values (and certainly, the most authentic Greek cuisine). Ten years ago the locals turned me on to this place, and I always catch at least a lunch there when I'm in the city. Their Avgolemono chicken soup followed by Dolmathes is a match made in heaven, and their leg of lamb (a dinner item because the serving will feed at least three) is roasted to perfection.

  • Pros: excellent value, authentic Greek, friendly service
  • Cons: parking, downtown
