With the addition of the McNamara terminal, DTW becomes a world-class airport.

by Contributor

In Short
Two dozen passenger airlines service Detroit Metro, including Northwest Airlines, which uses it as a hub for its domestic routes and international flights. In early 2002, DTW opened the new McNamara terminal--a state-of-the art concourse boasting 97 gates, 90 E-ticket kiosks, and nearly 80 shops and retaurants. Also added were an 11,000-space parking garage and a second main entrance road to ease traffic congestion on I-94.

Nice Terminal, Wrong Airline

by jfoxwi

Everytime I fly Northwest, it seems that I have to go through Detroit on one leg of the trip. Nice new terminal but the fact is, is that it is still Northwest and it is still Detroit. I have never left Detroit on-time and the people that work at DTW are not as helpful as other hub airports. Imagine having your NW flight cancelled...then being told that you could catch the other airlines flight you have to go to the old terminal and that can take half an hour! No Way!

A Monorail to Get to Gates?

by jthmsd

Possibly the worst designed airport in the US. If you end up at the far end of Terminal A (McNamara) you can either hoof it for a 1/2 mile or wait for the indoor monorail. Terminal B has poor directions to Baggage, Ground Transport, etc. Restaurants are few and lack quality. The stores are limited. You can't even by a DVD or CD there.

Long Lay Overs

by Jim_moss

It's been awhile since I've flown through Detroit until this year. I was very pleased to see the new terminal. I use the DTW hub twice a month with a 2 to 3 hour layover. I have found plenty of attractions to keep me occupied. The only thing they lack are lockers or some type of hand carried luggage storage. With long layovers it is nice to put your bag and case somewhere. In Europe they still have lockers and it would be nice to see them in the States. Besides that the new terminal is great.

It's Getting Better

by maggot

In my opinion the facilites are the worst. They are very old. But with the addition of the new terminal it seems as though they're trying to bring it up to par with other airports.

Pleasantly Surprised

by skelaxin99

My girlfriend had the pleasure of flying into DTW (the Northwest Terminal) both coming and going to our destination and i was pleasantly surprised.

I, being from Houston, had know idea the terminal was in fact new, but i loved the way it was designed. I loved the openess of the space, the "people movers" (automated walking trails), as well as the monorail. Our layover was for about an hour or so both times and we had a chance to explore the terminal a bit. Restrooms were clean and even though there were a lot of passengers in the terminal, it didn't seem overcrowded as some terminals do.

  • Pros: Open Space Feeling, Automated Walking, Large Plasma Screens
