So I tried Tomatoes Apizza after reading the reviews (we went to the one at Grand River & Haggerty). We were not quite sure what to expect. We had the salad bar (really good & fresh), cheesy bread & a pizza (1/2 red w/ sausage & 1/2 green). First off - the pizza ginormous. So we definetly did not need the cheesy bread. The pizza itself had really strong garlic and authentic tomato sauce, which I liked because it was so fresh. The crust is very thin, which I was expecting, but I did not care for it. It was somewhat burned & kind of hurt my jaw to eat. Leftover were not good at all - the crust was even tougher the second day. The restaurant decor is very plain/uninspired, and does not serve alcohol. I like to try new restaurants and support the local ones, but I guess I like my Buddy's pizza better.
Pros: fresh toppings & salad
Cons: ambiance & thin crust

The pie smelled good but the crust tasted like cardboard and the edges were blackened and burned..YUCK...carcinogens! Give me BUDDY'S any day.
Pros: good salad bar at lunch only
Cons: burned pizza crust

Great pizza! Great pizza, and unlike most of what is offered in metro Detroit. East Coast-style pizza, with a cracker-thin, crispy crust, and a sauce that actually tastes of tomatoes (novel concept). If your idea of pizza is delivered in 30 minutes or less, or $5 large pizzas, please stay away. You'll only hurt yourself. However, if you enjoy a quality pie made by cooks that care about their product, c'mon down! White pie, red pie, crab apizza. Try something different! Is this the best pizza in Detroit? Well, maybe not. But it is definitely one of the best, and the best East Coast-style pie in the area. How can you go wrong with that?
Pros: Fantastic pies!
Cons: Too far a drive from my home ;-)

The GREAT POINTS: This truly is "different' Pizza- definately more gourmet and for a certain taste. The ingredients are far superior to what you would find in even the best Italian ristorante. Beer and wings with this pizza would be a sin. No one has commented yet on the pasta, which with the piping hot chunks of fresh mozzarella I thought was divine. Shortly after moving into the neighborhood, we received a flyer for an entirely free dinner (not inexpensive by any means) - Lg. Pizza, Pasta, Salad, Pop and Breadsticks, which was a wonderful treat. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: While the staff that answers the phone for carry-out is extremely professional (you never hear them say "Please Hold" when they answer the call) the wait for the delivery or to pick up the pizza can be very lengthy. Once I called for a delivery and an hour later, there was still no pizza. They had marked me for "pick-up". While they made fresh food and delivered it shortly, there was no discount offered- and I had 2 very crabby pre-schoolers waiting for their pizza. The only complaint on the pizza is that it does not reheat well, but maybe if it did, it wouldn't be so good fresh :) All in all, I would say that anybody within driving distance really needs to give this pizza a try.

My family is from New Haven and I attended college there. When I first moved to Michigan, I gave up pizza all together after eating what the area had to offer. But thanks to Mike Weinstein and Tomatoes Apizza, I no longer have to travel to New Haven to get a great pizza. Crust is perfect, sauce has just the right flavors and Mike has gone one better with some varieties that are lacking on Wooster Street. His white pizza is to die for. Give his Crab Pizza a try and also the pizza of the month, you will not be disappointed.

This pizza is nothing like you have ever tasted! They are giant slices with only fresh ingrediants. My favorite is the spinach because they use actual fresh leaf spinach, not from a can so it gets crispy. They also have a great salad bar that includes balsamic vinigarett, sliced meats and sliced mozzarella cheese. Fridays are all you can eat pizza buffet and it is worth it. It is definately a place to check out becuase it is so unique. The atmosphere is also like a small family place. Nothing flashy or special but comfortable. All of the waitresses and staff are friendly. Not a pizza I would recommend eating at home becuase it is so huge and thin crust I don't think it woudl hold up very well.
Pros: Amazing Pizza, Best in Detroit!
Cons: The buffet isnt every day!

Just returned from a trip to New Haven and a wonderful pizza at Frank Pepe's on Wooster Street. I was told by the owner of Tomatoes that it was the place to go for great pizza. He was right on. On the other hand this restaurant has good but hardly memorable pizza in the same way. My criteria are pretty simple: Mozarella cheese with real flavor and a stringy consistency when piping hot. Pepperoni that is not paper thin and has a kick to it. (Hand sliced if possible) Tomato sauce that has a spicy flavor. Thin crispy crust..... On this basis I would say that Tomatoes Apizza has a ways to go to get to this level. With a little tweaking, this hard working owner chef can get there.

The pizza at Tomatoes Apizza will be more familiar to East Coast diners or those who have actually eaten the real thing in Italy. Chicago deep-dish it ain't. Think very thin crust that has a flavor and texture all its own. The ingredients are straight-foward (cheese, tomoatoes, basil, garlic) and the pizzas are a tribute to a heritage of simple, hearty elemental flavors. Try a red and a white. There are special pizzas served every month. No other Detroit pizzeria does it quite this way and you're unlikely to get pizza like this anywhere else in the Midwest. The restaurant is pretty spare so take-out and use your own candles and red-white checked tablecloth. Mangia!
Pros: traditional pizza, inexpensive, quality ingredients
Cons: interior restaurant

I lived near New Haven Connecticut over twenty years ago. We used to go to Pepe's, Sally's and the Spot. These places are now owned by the same family and serve the same style pizza, which they call Abeets. The Pizza from New Haven is what they serve in Northern Italy. It is thin cristed, has just the right balance of sauce, crust and cheese and melts in your mouth. Now Mike, the owner of Tomatoes, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute; the best cooking school in the world. Mike "went underground" and learned how to make New Haven Style pizza by working at Sally's. He learned from the masters. These is nothing like Tomatoes between here and New Haven. Whenever I go back east I make a pilgimage to New Haven. But now I really am missing noting. Bravo Mike! Try Tomatoes Abeets. You won't be sorry.
Pros: Taste, Authenticity, Value
Cons: None, None, None

I was skeptical because I'm used to what we think is "traditional" pizza, like sauce and pepperoni. Plus, I don't like tomatoes which was the main ingredient on the pizza we ate. Anyway, I was more than impressed, and I'm a picky eater. I'm happy I happened to move right across the street because I will definitely dine there again and again!!
